The holidays were full of laughter and lights and … food. So much food. Take a moment to just check in with you body to notice if it feels perhaps a bit more sluggish? Bloated perhaps? Having more trouble getting out of bed than usual? Those are normal responses after we indulge, but when you’re feeling ready to feel normal again, here are our wellness team’s top 5 tips to bounce back from the holidays:
- Eat fiber. Fiber is the single best thing you can give to your digestive system as a thank you for all the hard work its done the past month. Aim for 5 cups daily of fruits and vegetables. Mix it up between cooked, raw or even some blended produce but start amping up those colorful plant foods!
- Swap out sugars. It can be really good for your brain to take a full break from sweet foods and added sugars, not just because sugars are inflammatory but because we start to crave the sweet flavors for satisfaction. Can you take a week (or 2 or 3) with no added sugars at all? Sweeten your yogurt with defrosted berries, your oatmeal with mashed bananas and your coffee with naturally sweet coconut milk!
- Hydrate. Get those bodily fluids moving and help your body to detox on its own by hydrating adequately. This means half your body weight each day in ounces of unsweetened liquids. And don’t forget the electrolytes! A squeeze of lemon juice with ½ tsp of sea salt in your morning glass of water can do wonders for your true hydration status!
- Move. Do not underestimate the power of short, simple bouts of movement. If hitting the gym or starting up a yoga routine seems overwhelming, then don’t do it. But DO move for 30-60 minutes every day. This can look like a 45 minute circuit or can be four 10-minute walking breaks.
- Sleep. None of the above matters very much if you aren’t sleeping long or deeply enough. Inadequate sleep on a regular basis puts the body into chronic stress and inflammation. Adults should aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every night. We also highly recommend testing out a sleep app to see if you are sleeping well. Apple Watch, Whoop and Oura Ring are just a few of the many devices out there to give you insight into your true sleep habits so you can make improvements to your own sleep routine.
